Quickie Food Review – The Blazer Pub – Purdys, NY

Quickie review:

Our waitress didn’t come to us or even introduce herself for 10-15 minutes at least, she was rude and seemed like she didn’t want to talk to us
Flat soda!
Burgers had no flavour!
Fries were so thick they were kind of undercooked and uncomfortable
Chicken fingers were too thick and had no flavour
Rolls weren’t toasted, so they were still hard

Food Review: The Burger Barn, Somers, NY

At this point, you’re probably annoyed with bad reviews, but I promise an amazing one is coming up next. Wait up for “Exelencia Mexicana” in Mahopac, NY.

So this place has been in my town for over a year now. When I first heard of it, I didn’t hear good things. Someone I knew told me they went there and the fries were burnt, the customer service was a mess, and more. I decided not to go and to give it time.

Another thing that kept me from going was just the feel of the restaurant. Somers restaurants, 85% of the time, don’t have a comfortable feel. Even if you’re a Somers resident, you might not feel like you belong.

First impressions:

The burger barn logo. http://theburgerbarn.com/menu/

Customer Service: Not a huge fan of the customer service here aside from the hostess, who was extremely sweet. You could tell no one wanted to help you out. Our waitress came at the beginning and maybe at the end? I can’t remember but I do remember we went really long without her coming over, even though I could see her standing against the wall for a really long time.

Some info: They apparently make all of their sauces themselves. I’ve had two or three of them and while one was amazing, the other was no good.

Atmosphere: I kind of felt like I walked into some cheap cafeteria. The place used to be really high-end so I was surprised to see people wearing t-shirts and writing the server’s names on the paper tablecloths. It’s like they were trying to be family friendly and failed. Whoops.

Menu: Click here for the menu I’m about to discuss. I looked at the menu ahead of time but didn’t look for long. I knew I’d just end up getting a burger… it’s a burger place… Also the friend I was with had been there before so I looked forward to getting some of her suggestions.

Drinks: Okay so this isn’t really a big deal but their ginger ale was disgusting. WHAT THE HELL. I did not want to be one of those people who complained about everything when I obviously was picking it all apart but like it wasn’t even a seltzer or syrup problem, it just tasted bad and cheap.

$$$: Pretty good prices. What you would expect from a burger place. I’m glad they didn’t try to overprice us, which I was worried about because of the town it was located in.

Food: As you can see, they definitely know how to plate their food in a fun way.

Signature Onion Ring Stacker: Just regular onion rings, but I quite liked them as well as the sauce they came with! It was arranged in a cute and fun way.

Truffle Mac & Cheese: Cannot tell if sour or just weird. That’s all I can say. In other news: CAN A BLOGGER JUST GET SOME GOOD MAC AND CHEESE UP IN THIS BITCH?!

Sweet Potato Fries: Okay I’m a bad person, I didn’t take any notes on these and don’t remember HOW I felt. I do remember that they first gave me regular fries and that wasn’t what I ordered. So instead of making me wait and taking back my fries, they just brought me the sweet potato fries as well. What I do remember is that there were very large pieces of salt on the fries and it was so delicious. It made the whole sweet/salty factor so great.

Gigs Bacon Cheeseburger: Bacon: CHECK Cheese: CHECK Burger: CHECK Except. Well. The burger was dry as hell and I’m not about that. I was still okay with eating the whole thing, but I feel like if you have the word “Burger” in the title of your restaurant, the Burgers should be amazing. They shouldn’t be dry. I shouldn’t have anything to complain about. Oh and they let me keep those regular fries but they were gross and I brought them home to my boyfriend because ew.

Overall, My food was just okay. I would probably go back and order something completely different but I definitely would not  I would go back to get the same stuff.  At some point I asked for honey mustard and it was like just honey. The chipotle sauce had no flavour to it, it was just spicy. There is nothing to rave about here. It’s a restaurant that can’t even live up to it’s title.

Food Review: Johnny D’s BBQ and Burgers, Mahopac, NY

There’s another BBQ place nearby, I had to try it… I JUST WANTED SOME GOOD SOUTHERN FOOD, OKAY!?

First impressions:

maybe better than Savannah’s Southern house and we don’t have many BBQ places in town, so they might be right. But that doesn’t mean it’s anywhere near great!

Customer Service: The bartender was the server, which I thought would be annoying and difficult but he was so nice! As a brown girl, I am always careful when I walk into a place that looks like it’s “for the locals.” For some reason, this had that look, but the bartender was extremely friendly and even invited us back at the end.

Some info: As I did with the last southern place, I asked if the owners were from the south. It turns out he’s from town, but he’s “just a really good cook.” I wasn’t sure yet whether this would be a good thing or a bad thing, so I just waited for the food to come.

Atmosphere: Like I said, it was a bar-like place. It looked like somewhere the locals go. The inside looked like a rush job, though, they wanted to make it look like a barn but it didn’t look as barn-ish as intended.

Menu: Click here for the menu I’m about to discuss. Here’s why I liked the menu: It was small enough that I didn’t have to take forever to decide what I wanted. What I really wanted was a burger, but I’ve been wanting to try good southern food so badly that I stuck with their more “southern” menu options. What I was confused about was the variety of items. They had burgers, sandwiches, BBQ (expected). But then they also had tacos and quesadillas, and THEN they also had nachos and seafood and some other bar food. I’m sure they were just trying to appeal to a big part of town, but the food just didn’t seem like it went together.

Drinks: Now, I didn’t have anything made by the bartender, but something I realized that was interesting to me is that they didn’t have fountain drinks. All of their beverages were canned or bottled and at first I thought it meant we’d only get one, but he brought us each a refill with no charge, so that was something to take note of.

$$$: Bar/Diner prices, which I was so happy with. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on food I might not have enjoyed.

Food: Here’s the big one, with pics! (I apologize, as some were taken in a rush and are slightly blurry).

Chips with Guac – The guac was spicy and we loved it. The salsa seemed like it could have been freshly made, but you never know these days…

Shrimp Po’Boy with fries. My boyfriend had it, and said it was just OK. There was nothing to rave or write home about, as we put it. At the time, he was only eating seafood, so he was hoping to have something flavourful but was disappointed.

Beer-battered onion rings – pretty good!!

“The Samitch” was alright. I do find myself wanting another every once in a while. My main problem was that there was SO much BBQ sauce on it, that the bottom bun was wet and soggy, and I wasn’t able to enjoy it as a sandwich, I ended up using a fork and knife. I did like it, though.

Half rack of baby back ribs with their “special BBQ sauce” on it. I tasted it and YUCK. The ribs might have been okay but the sauce was sour and absolutely disgusting. I couldn’t even finish the rib because the taste was so bad. I never would have put the sauce on her ribs if I would have known it would be so bad. A BBQ place with bad BBQ sauce? No good!

Once again, I just wanted some Southern Mac n Cheese! I got this sort of cafeteria, watered down version, which certainly wasn’t as disgusting as Savannah’s Southern House in Yorktown Heights (see my master post for more info), but it definitely wasn’t anything I would order again. I could make it so much better at home.

Overall, My food was okay, but the two people I came with certainly did not enjoy their food as much as I would have hoped. I would go back to get the same sandwich and for my friends to try some different things, but I was overall not too happy with the food. Most of the points I gave them were for the customer service and appetizers.

  • Only a few things on the menu were worth getting again, but we’re not deterred forever, I’d at least try to come back and try something else to give it another chance.

Food Review: HK Hell’s Kitchen, New York, NY

During the Pride parade, I went to HK Hell’s Kitchen for lunch with my friends!

Things to remember: CASH ONLY

Customer Service: Okay so here’s my main issue, the host and hostess were very confused!! After we put our name in, we waiting outside because there was almost no room in the actual restaurant to wait for a table. After waiting for almost an hour, a hostess who did not initially help us, went and asked another group if they wanted the available table. But they had been waiting for less time than we had!!! Luckily, they were waiting for a friend so I was able to speak to the hostess and get the table for myself and my group.

Atmosphere: It was a small place, but it looked like most of the people there were preparing to go to the parade! It wasn’t rowdy, but the music was good, I actually wish it was much louder!

Menu: I have so much to say! It was a nice and simple menu with a lot of choices, but not overwhelming. Not only was the menu great for my boyfriend who only eats seafood, but there was quite a selection, I could not choose what to get at first! What we all knew we wanted was the brunch special. With this special, you can have unlimited mimosas, screwdrivers, bellinis or champagne with anything of the meals on the menu for only $16.95 extra, and this is quite the deal if you like to drink! They had breakfast and brunch options, lunch options and more, it’s a well designed menu for sure!

Drinks: The drinks were honestly not that good, but after a few, you don’t care anymore. I felt like the orange juice was cheap and it was the main component in two of the drinks, so I was not impressed. The drinks were also warm, so that was definitely a downer.

$$$: I think it could have been less expensive for sure. I wasn’t as happy with my food or drinks as I thought I would be.

FOOD:  As you can see in the featured picture, the presentation was beautiful! Although my friends weren’t huge fans of the fries, I really enjoyed them. They went perfectly with the wasabi sauce that came with my boyfriend’s sandwich. My favorite part was that we got sooo many fries, so when my friends didn’t finish them, I ate them instead, ha!

I ordered a Lobster Sandwich. It was alright. I wish I would have ordered something different since the menu was so interested. I was definitely filled up after eating mine and my boyfriend’s fries but the sandwich was puny and I was not a fan, it didn’t have much lobster and was more expensive that I wanted it to be.

My boyfriend ordered a Salmon Burger. WOW was that good! I had a small bite of it with some of the wasabi sauce and I definitely wish I had chosen that option on the menu instead. It had SO much flavour and it was SO big!!

Overall, I had a really good time. Our waiter was a sweetheart and had the best suspenders for pride week and the food was good enough that I had no complaints. Unlimited drinks is never something to complain about either, so I can say I had a good enough experience.

Food Review: Savannah’s Southern House, Yorktown Heights, NY

EDIT: This restaurant sure made a complete 180. Please feel free to read my previous review but the updated review and grade are here.

This is my first real food review, although I love food and love to review. So i apologize for the lack of pictures. I’ll never come to this place again, but I promise I’ll post pictures of the food I review in the future. I’ll start this with a quote from my boyfriend’s daughter: “There’s no one here named Savannah, we’re not in the south, and this isn’t a house!” Those were definitely not the only things missing at Savannah’s Southern House in Yorktown Heights. NY. Nope, there was much, MUCH more. Let’s take it from the beginning. When I first saw the sign for Savannah’s, I was so excited! I’d never tried authentic Southern Food as I’d never been to the South, but could this be something almost as good? If these people were Southerners moving up to the North, they’d made the right choice! I just knew they would get a lot of business, and a lot of repeat customers if they were good. IF they were good… That should give you the idea that they weren’t. At all.

Customer Service: They were all pretty nice. The hostess was the daughter of the owners, I found out soon after I’d arrived. I asked her if the owners were from the South. It turns out they are an Italian family who owns a pizza place nearby. One that I’ve never been to but I’ve heard it’s pretty good. I judged them hard, but I tried to give the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure with tons of studying, one could eventually cook Southern food the right way… right?

Atmosphere: It was loud but beautiful inside. It looked like they made a real transformation of the place, it felt like I was in a large cabin, and it was homey. There was a fireplace nearby, and it obviously wasn’t on as it was the middle of the summer, but it seemed like a nice touch.

Menu: Most of the food on the menu seemed pretty southern-y. You can find the menu here. $$$: Way too expensive. I’ll get to this later but a plate of Macaroni and Cheese with four pieces of Fried Shrimp was nearly $20. Luckily, I ate hardly any of it and got my money back.

AND FINALLY FOOD:  We received a complimentary basket of biscuits (MY FAVE) and corn bread with butter on the side. The biscuits were hard and dry and tasted like flour and the corn bread was surprisingly okay. I did like them. For our appetizer, we ordered “Crab Cakes” which are described as Lump Crab with Remoulade Dipping Sauce and are WAY too expensive ($11.95). The presentation was so-so, just the two crab cakes with a small dipping container on the side. It tasted absolutely disgusting. It was WAY too fishy and looked like tuna salad in crab cake form! It sure didn’t taste like anything crab cake I’ve ever had and my boyfriend’s daughter spit it out immediately. After a few bites of it, I was gagging and could not eat anymore. My boyfriend, being much less sensitive than I am, was able to eat a majority of it on his own. And there was far too much lemon. I was not impressed but was definitely hoping they would make up for it with the rest of their food.

Now onto the meals. I’m rolling my eyes at the thought of expressing this much disappointment. I ordered “Mac&Cheese” with added fried shrimp for a total of $19.95 because honestly, WHO can mess up Macaroni and Cheese, and also, isn’t that a southern staple? Well, I’ll tell you who can mess it up, this restaurant can! The macaroni was WAY overcooked and mushy and just overloaded with cheese, possibly to try and cover up the mushy macaroni. The fried shrimp was wet with grease and the breading was falling off of the shrimp, I ate two of the four I was given, and just couldn’t bring myself to eat any more. My boyfriend ordered “Fish&Chips” which is described as “Catfish battered and fried, mustard remoulade, hand cut fries.” and he also ordered the fried shrimp on the side. His fries were dry and tasteless, and his catfish and shrimp were just as wet as mine with the breading falling off those as well. His daughter ordered (from the kid’s menu) a Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries. She didn’t mind it too much but after tasting her pork and fries, I realized those too were dry and overcooked. They had a BBQ flavor and the dryness could probably be covered with the hamburger bread, but I would not have ordered it for myself.

Overall, as you can tell, this entire experience was a disaster. Not one of the meals or sides were acceptable other than the cornbread, which probably wasn’t made in-house anyway! I am very disappointed after having been so excited to try Southern Food and will never come back to try their food again.

Please see here for the new and updated rating (a 7/10) and review. The place has a new chef and you’ll be glad to hear it’s made quite the difference!
